Domaine Frederic Aublanc
Brouilly, Beaujolais, France
Say hello to one of our favorite "under-the-radar" winemakers of beaujolais: Frédéric Aublanc.
Fred's production comes from 2.5 hectares of vineyards in the commune of Quince,
facing Mount Brouilly - plots which have been in the family since 1875. He comes from a winemaking family in Beaujolais, where he was born and raised. And the family has the cellar to prove it! If you are ever lucky enough to have a dinner with Fred, he and his dad are sure to pull you some amazing old vintages. His father is vigneron George Aublanc (who is still making wine as well.)
Fred's vines are within the appellation of Brouilly, though he chooses to forgo AOP certification often - he is an independent spirit and not particularly interested in sorting through the complexities of the regulatory system. Who has the time!?
Though uncertified, the vines are worked without any chemical treatments and harvested by hand. His winemaking style is low-intervention (no inoculated yeasts, low s02), with partial carbonic maceration and aging in demi muid or barrique. The resulting wines aren't your everyday "glou-glou" style of beaujolais; they are complex and structured, full of nuances that unfold over time in the glass.
And a glass of Fred's Brouilly 2020 next to the fireplace, sounds like the perfect way to spend a holiday to us!
